Innovative In-Person Assessment in the AI Era (March 2026 IAH Workshop)

By Alena Aniskiewicz, CISAH

As part of the “Valuing Voices, Voicing Values” IAH workshop series, IAH instructors from across the college gathered in March to discuss “Innovative In-Person Assessment in the AI-Era.” The conversation began with a recognition of the ways AI has affected our traditional methods of assessment. As essays and online exams become increasingly susceptible to AI, how are we rethinking the ways we support and assess our students’ learning?

Though framed around ideas of innovation, many instructors discussed “returning to basics” – including blue book exams and in-class writing. While the forms of these assignments may be traditional, the workshop highlighted how we might find space for creativity and community building in the familiar. From essay questions that ask students to contribute lines to what became a jointly composed poem on class topics to ongoing structured in-class essay writing, the examples shared highlighted the valuing in slowing down and insisting upon the value of thoughtful and original engagement with course material.

Recognizing the ways in which in-class exams and writing might pose a unique set of accessibility challenges, the workshop concluded with a discussion of resources available to instructors. Links to those resources and additional materials from the workshop are available here:
