Using Transfer Credit for IAH Requirements

IAH 201-210 Requirements and Transfer Courses

New transfer students may fulfill the the first IAH requirement (IAH 201-210) by completing one of the following combination of courses. All courses in these combinations must be completed before students mariculate to MSU. Once students have attended MSU, they must complete the requirement by taking an IAH 201-210 course. Also, AP credit cannot be combined with transfer credit from another institution of higher education. (AP equivalencies are available at http://admissions.msu.edu/documents/MSU_AP_Equivalencies.pdf).

New Transfer Students Only – All Credit Must be Earned Prior to Matriculation to MSU

IAH CourseTransfer course combinations
201 (HST 202 or 203) + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 201
202 HST 206 + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 202
203 (HST 381*, 382*, 383*, or 384*) + completion of Tier 1 writing  requirement = IAH 203
204 (HST 209 or 210) + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 204
205 HST 208 + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 205
206 HST 250* + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 206
207 (ENG 140, 142,or 153) + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH  207
208 (MUS 211 or 212)* + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 208
209 (HA 101*, 102*, or 150) + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH  209
210 HST 373* + completion of Tier 1 writing requirement = IAH 210

*These courses are 3 credit courses.  But in conjunction with completion of Tier 1 writing prior to matriculation to MSU, they may be used to waive the corresponding IAH courses.

The HST courses for IAH 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206, and 210 would apply only to non-HST majors.  Similarly, the ENG courses for IAH 207, the MUS courses for IAH 208, and the HA courses for IAH 209 would apply only to non-ENG majors, non-MUS majors, and non-HA majors, respectively.

IAH 211-241 Requirements and Transfer Courses

New transfer students may meet the second IAH course requirement (IAH 211-241) with courses in the the arts and humanities (like history, literature, philosophy, religious studies, music or art appreciation, or music or art history, and so on). Students intending to transfer to MSU should consult Transfer MSU for their institution at http://transfer.msu.edu to determine approved IAH transfer equivalencies. If a course is not listed in Transfer MSU, students may contact IAH at 517-355-0366 to schedule an appointment with the director of IAH to review the course for IAH transfer equivalency. Students will need to provide a course syllabus and other relevant course materials for review.

Use of Transfer Credit for IAH Equivalency by Current MSU Students

Current MSU students who plan to enroll in courses at other institutions of higher education to fulfill an IAH requirement should consult Transfer MSU. Courses not approved in Transfer MSU must be reviewed at least a semester before a student plans to take a course as another institution for IAH equivalency (so that a new transfer equivalency can be entered into Transfer MSU prior to when the credit is earned; transfer equivalencies cannot be changed retroactively).  Also, current MSU students may use courses at another institution only when the course has been approved as an “exact match” equivalent to a specific IAH course. Students with 56 or more credits may not use transfer credit from a two-year institutions to fulfill an IAH requirement; only “exact match” IAH transfer equivalents from a four-year institution may be used by students with 56 or more credits. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic adviser and/or with the director of IAH before planning to transfer credit from another institution to fulfill an IAH requirement.
