IAH 211C: Area Studies in Multicultural Civilizations: The Americas

This IAH course has four major orientations that crosscut and complement each other.  Along the first path, students watch films that depict Hollywood images of race, gender and ethnicity.  The second and third paths entail careful reading of critical essays by professional scholars and of selected creative works by a rich diversity of contemporary authors.  In the fourth path, students will respond verbally and in writing to what they have seen and read.

IAH 241E: Creative Process

Using Durant's question as a prompt, we will explore the close relationship of art and life:  Why did collage become such an explosive force in the early parts of the 20th century?  What impact did the industrial revolution, mass-production, and poplar culture have in the development of collage?  How did collage move from its avant-garde beginnings to full immersion in our present day cut-and-paste culture?   In what ways has collage moved beyond the canvas, a poetry composition, or musical score into the social fabric of our culture?
