IAH 241F students experience first-hand cardboard/hand-painted books with Eloisa Cartonera at the MSU Library (October 6, 2009)

Date and Location:
October 6, 2009 - 4:00-6:00 PM
MSU Libraries, W449

Maria Soledad Gomez and Washington Cucurto. members of Eloisa Cartonera Publishing Cooperative in Argentina, visit MSU on October 6-7. IAH 241F students, led by professor Marco Diaz-Muñoz, will have the opportunity of experiencing the philosophy of first-hand making of cardboard/hand-painted books by this Argentinean editorial project. Founded in 2003, Eloisa Cartonera publishes low-cost, avant-garde works by writers from throughout Latin America, who in turn support the press by donating their unpublished material. The collective's books have covers made of cardboard, which is gathered by collectors, called "cartoneros," and hand-painted with tempera. Such a way of producing, circulating and consuming uniquely designed books thus provides a meeting point for two sectors who would otherwise rarely meet, writers and "cartoneros," while simultaneously fulfilling two objectives: promoting literary culture and combating social exclusion. Eloisa Cartonera, Buenos Aires

IAH 241F: Traditions in World Art, taught by professor Marco Diaz-Muñoz in fall 2009, focuses on the relationship between selected works of art by Twentieth-Century Latin American and Caribbean artists, the social context in which they were produced, and the ways such works were received by society. The students of this course will have the opportunity to experience the crossroad in which Latin American art, literature and community service meet.

The event is part of the MSU libraries series colloquia and is co-sponsored by the Center for Integrative Studies in the Arts and Humanities, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Eloísa Cartonera's visit to MSU will be a great opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty to meet the members of a successful collective that is doing innovative work that brings together literary production and movements for social justice in Latin America. After visiting MSU, members of Eloísa Cartonera will participate in the 2009 Latin American Cartoneras Publishers Conference which will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Madison, on October 8-9, 2009.
